2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive review: a fantastic hybrid SUV crippled by giant beaver teeth

Driving from Las Vegas to San Diego in a 2026 BMW X3 30 was a fantastic way to get to know this small hybrid SUV.

  • It’s extremely comfortable and surprisingly quiet on long road trips.
  • It’s really fast. Ripping away from stoplights or merging onto highways with any sort of urgency always made me wonder how this thing only produces 255 hp.
  • It’s kinda ugly. Despite how much I enjoyed the driving experience, I just couldn’t learn to like the comically-shaped beaver tooth front grill. I tried to accept it. I really did.

They see me rollin’, they hatin’ the way the exterior of this X3 looks, and I don’t blame them because the front grill is…questionable.

My full review of the 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive

Before going any further, I think it’s important to explain what an “X3 30 xDrive” is:

  • X3 is one of BMW‘s smallest SUV’s for 2026 (only the X1 and X2 are smaller). It’s the baby brother of the X5 and X7.
  • 30 is the base trim level designation. The 50 offers more comfort and performance options.
  • xDrive is the name for BMW’s slightly controversial full time all-wheel-drive system.

First impressions

This particular X3 was a rental car that I picked up at the Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport. The goal? To drive it all the way home to San Diego (roughly 350 miles) via desert backroads. In the middle of August. Without dying.

It was either this or the Genesis parked next to it. I chose the BMW, because boy do I ever have some good beaver teeth jokes that I need to share with the world.

“Much like a beaver, the X3 is the only compact luxury crossover SUV that can floss with a tree.” See? This is gonna be a really fun review, y’all.

I was quite familiar with the way that the 2026 X3 looked before seeing this one for the first time. More importantly, I already knew that I wasn’t a fan of the large / oversized front grill.

In all seriousness, the grill isn’t that bad. There’s a part of me that is intrigued by it. There’s another part of me that is repulsed by it. The beaver part of me is very (very) aroused by it.

Seeing the interior for the first time was a rush! At the very least, it provided me with the energetic jolt of adrenaline that I needed to keep going after being so disappointed by that front grill. The guts of this thing are extremely stylish, extremely techy, and very BMW. It felt sporty and ready to rip.

Slipping behind the wheel for the very first time made me realize how difficult this review was going to be. Beaver teeth jokes are a lot less funny (and slightly inappropriate) in a vehicle with an interior as sophisticated and good looking as this.

Styling and design

To me, the most interesting thing about the 2026 X3 is the exterior design. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an extremely generic looking crossover SUV with such a hideous (and very attention getting) front grill. Whether or not you’ll love or hate the way it looks depends entirely on what angle you’re viewing it from I guess.

The only accurate way to describe the exterior design of the 2026 BMW X3 is to say that it’s a giant beaver-tooth front grill with a small SUV attached to it. I don’t know how they did that, but they did.

Knock knock. Who’s there? Beaver. Beaver who? Beaver careful around that front grill!

Other than the front end, the rest of the exterior of the 2026 X3 is fairly generic looking. I do give the designers credit for the long hood and steeply angled windshield however. It looks sporty. From some angles.

Out back, it’s a fairly generic looking compact / crossover SUV. Not ugly. Hardly gorgeous. Only mildly beaver-esque (thank goodness).
Black 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive side profile view
It actually looks kind of neat in the side profile IMHO. Racy looking beavers with long hoods and a cab-rearward design are my kind of beavers.
2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive 19 inch wheels
Whatever the beaver tooth front grill can’t grind down to a pulp, these machined front face 19 inch wheels certainly will. I wouldn’t wanna stick my finger in there as this thing is speeding down to the local dam, that’s for dang sure.

Speaking of 19 inch wheels, they look tiny underneath this X3 don’t they? “Compact SUV” must mean something different in Germany than it does here the US. “Don’t vury, zee Americans are too ignorant to notice zuch zings…”

The interior

It wasn’t until I returned home and started editing the pictures for this review that I realized something interesting about the interior: It looks a lot better in person than it does in pictures.

Black interior and front seats of the 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive
The interior of the 2026 X3 is so (so) much nicer looking than the exterior. If anything, this juxtaposition makes me want to get to know my local beavers. They’re probably really good people and we don’t even know it.

Sitting behind the wheel is a very BMW-like experience. The front seats are deep and supportive with decent lumbar support. The steering wheel is thick and positioned perfectly for spirited driving. And I especially like how low the dashboard is. It’s not quite like the ‘knees up / go kart’ seating position that I experienced in the 2023 Tesla Model 3, but it’s close.

The 2026 X3 features a rectangular flat panel LCD attached in a not-so-seamless way to the dashboard. I hated this in the 2025 Mustang convertible. Here in BMW land? The attractiveness of the user interface (and the gentle sounds it makes) makes this tolerable. I like! Kinda sorta!

The intoxicating cocktail of rich leather and new car opulence aided in the increased tolerance as well. Is it as baller looking as the interior of the 2025 Mercedes Benz C300? Not even close. But it wins the Mustang comparison hands-down.

Oh. There’s a sunroof too. Just a little one.

The control dial for the infotainment screen wasn’t all that useful IMHO. The gearshift lever was a bit confusing at first, but I ended up liking the simplicity of it. The thumb wheel for audio volume was extremely convenient. The accumulation of beaver dander was both unsightly and gross.
Wireless charging pads with USB-C ports in the 2026 BMW X3 30
Hooray for dual wireless charging pads! Boo for the fact that neither would charge my phone! The best they could do was maintain its current charge unfortunately.
2026 BMW X3 30 steering wheel
The squircle-shaped steering wheel framed the beaver tooth gauge cluster perfectly IMHO. And once you notice how the steering wheel is offset slightly to the right of the drivers seat, you’ll never unsee it. Sorry bro.

So yeah, about that beaver tooth user interface. Here in its default state, you’ve got a speed graph on the left, a voltage graph on the right (remember, this is a hybrid), and a numerical speed graphic in the center. I didn’t even feel the need to customize this if I’m being honest. I like beaver teeth, OK?

Speaking of user interfaces in their default state, this is the main menu for the infotainment screen. And check out that glare from that wee little sunroof that I showed you earlier! I hated this in the Mustang convertible. But here in BMW land? What glare? Are you smelling that leather???
Wireless Apple CarPlay on the infotainment screen in the 2026 BMW X3 30
Wireless Apple CarPlay engage! I especially like how the climate control settings are always accessible. I especially hated how I had to set up CarPlay manually every time I got into the vehicle. I know I have a tendency to be forgettable, but come on. It’s 2026 for crying out loud.

Knock knock. Who’s there? Beaver. Beaver who? Beaver careful as you slide into these backseats, because the leather is awfully nice back here, and you wouldn’t wanna scratch anything.

Engine and drivetrain

The 2026 BMW X3 30 features a 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 222 hp and 245 pound feet of torque. It’s connected to a mild 45 V hybrid system, which gives a little extra kick when you need it most (such as escaping the humiliation of pedestrians yelling “Beaver Boy!” as you drive by). It’s fast.

I’d imagine that some of y’all are probably getting tired of the beaver teeth jokes, but when each individual tooth of the front grill is larger than the entire engine, I just can’t help it.

Beaver careful of that thick red wire along the top edge of the engine bay. It looks serious.

Shifts are smooth and precise (and hardly noticeable) with the 8-speed automatic transmission. It’s connected to BMW’s tried and somewhat true xDrive full-time all-wheel-drive system, which performed flawlessly during my road trip across the desert southwest.

“Zee simple Americans vill be very impressed vit vis!” I will (and was) indeed. Manually shifting the 8-speed transmission via these perfectly positioned paddle shifters was quite satisfying. Both upshifts and downshifts were as precise as one would expect them to be in a modern German-engineered SUV.

Driving impressions (and handling)

Honestly? I was expecting this thing to ride a lot like the 2025 Jeep Compass Trailhawk that I recently drove. Maybe a little floaty. Perhaps a little skittish in the corners. And definitely nothing like a sports car. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

This 2026 X3 felt every bit as nimble as a well maintained 2021 BMW 330i. It was planted on tight mountain roads. Body roll was minimal. And out on the open road? As smooth as a Cadillac (one of the big ones from the 1970s).

POV driving a 2026 BMW X3 30 across the Nevada desert
“They see me rollin’, they…uh. Wait a sec. Where is everyone?” As much fun as it is to be seen driving around in a fancy new BMW, cruising along on an empty highway in the middle of nowhere is the best way to enjoy a 2026 X3 IMHO. The fact that it’s so comfortable (and fast) makes it the ultimate road trippin’ vehicle.

Correction: cruising along on an empty highway in the middle of nowhere preferably in the early morning or late evening when the sun isn’t directly overhead is the best way to enjoy an X3. The hot sun coming through the glass roof can be a bit overbearing in the middle of the day.

Build quality

BMWs don’t have the best reputation when it comes to long-term reliability, but this X3 seemed as if it was built to last. At least it felt that way. Everything was tight and squeak-free. Buttons and switches felt crispy and precise. There was nothing that looked or felt questionable. Other than the beaver teeth I mean.

Gas mileage

Call me a skeptic, but I was not expecting great (or even decent) MPG from this X3. Remember how disappointed I was with the efficiency of the last hybrid vehicle that I drove (a 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe)?

Thankfully this little BMW SUV did me a solid, with an average of 26.8 miles per gallon during the drive from Las Vegas to San Diego. Keep in mind that there were some very big mountains to climb (as well as long empty desert roads to mob), so it’s probably not as good as it could’ve been.

26.8 mpg, eh? Not too shabby. To be honest I was more amused by the fact that the shape of the end caps of the fuel pumps matched the shape of the beaver teeth exactly. Those clever Germans, man. “Hah hah zat is so funny!”

Pros and cons of the 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive

As long as you can get past the controversial looks of the front end, the X3 is a fantastic small crossover SUV. There. I said it.

Pros

  • Despite being officially clarified as a small SUV, it certainly doesn’t feel that way. I found it to be spacious on the inside with plenty of room to spread out.
  • The driving position is phenomenal IMHO. It’s more sports car than SUV.
  • It’s a lot faster than a straight line than it would seem just by looking at the lowly horsepower and torque numbers.

Cons

  • Did I mention the funny looking beaver tooth front grill yet? Just wanna make sure I didn’t forget it.
  • The infotainment system (and / or Apple CarPlay) had a horrible time remembering my phone. Manually reconnecting it every time I got back in got old real fast.
  • Putting the transmission into reverse from park it’s awkward, because the vehicle won’t start rolling as soon as you let off the brake. A little throttle is required. Which is odd. And potentially dangerous.
