Thinking about buying a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT

1987 Pontiac Fiero GT

I hate to admit this, but I’m giving serious thought to buying a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT. Well, as of yesterday it was considered “serious”, but I’m having second thoughts now. But let’s back up for a second, shall we?

Those of you who have been following my car fund project know that I’ve set a preliminary goal of $10k as the point at which I would trade my 1996 Mustang GT on a different car. I’m making really good progress towards that goal, but that still isn’t stopping me from browsing craigslist every now and then just to see what’s available here locally in San Diego for $10k and under. I shouldn’t be doing that quite yet, I know, but it’s just so hard to resist!

Last Friday night I came across a 1987 Fiero GT that appears to be in pretty good shape, and it started making me think about buying it – just for fun. Fun you say?? Yes! Keep in mind that I was 13 years old in 1987, and the Fiero was pretty much my dream car back then. I have to qualify that statement with the fact that I grew up just northwest of Detroit, so my family’s roots to the American auto industry run deep. American cars were perfectly fine in my opinion, and GM was my favorite brand. More specifically, Pontiac was what I loved the most! Need proof? I had a blast taking pics of brand new Pontiac’s at a local dealership back in 1987.

So…here’s my chance to own a clean Fiero GT. Finally. After all these years! But this doesn’t fit into my plan of buying progressively better cars at all. Depending on how you look at it, the Fiero would be a big step down from my Mustang. And do I really want to be driving around in a 30 year old American car? It wouldn’t be my daily driver of course, but I need it to be somewhat reliable. It would a risky purchase for sure.

I’m still thinking about it, but I’m leaning towards passing on it and sticking to my $10k goal. If you never hear anything about this again, you’ll know that I didn’t buy it. But you can be certain you’ll be sick of hearing about “my Fiero” if I go ahead with the purchase!
